It’s fitting that the lanky-leaved snake plant, which is also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and technically a succulent, is tough enough to stand up to practically any condition. “Snake plants can tolerate lower light, drying out and just about anything except extreme overwatering,” Hachadourian says. While they are dangerous for dogs if ingested, according to the ASPCA, in a pet-free office, they are “good architectural plants” (they generally stand straight up), notes Cheng, and because of their slow growth, they require little maintenance in terms of pruning or cleaning up dead leaves.
